Fulham Palace Museum

Museum of Fulham Palace

We all know how hard it is when you are visiting somewhere new to determine what places you will visit and the ones you will skip. Your own preferences will certainly come into play, however you should give yourself a chance to experience things you might not imagine would interest you. Of all things when you are in West London you will certainly want to visit Fulham Palace. The best place to start is at the Museum of Fulham Palace. Here you will learn about the palace’s history through a video discussing the restoration as well as a scale model of the palace. There are also many exhibitions in the museum that change on a regular basis that exhibit fine arts, costumes, textiles, and social history.

There is a gallery space that shows off art that has been inspired by the Palace and the porgramme is innovative and excellent. If you want an experience of a lifetime then have tea in the café bar that is open from 9 am until 5 pm. You will find the bar in the Bishop Howley’s drawing room area and the ambiance will make you want to stay all day! You may hire out different spaces and rooms within the palace throughout the year for any type of public or private event you may be hosting.

The Victorian Chapel and grounds are available for tours sporadically. The schedule for tours is every second and fourth Sunday and every third Wednesday at 2 pm. This schedule is the same every month but you may call ahead for confirmation if necessary. The public may access the grounds where the walled garden from the 18th century stands as well as the lawns and woodlands from dusk till dawn every day.

School groups frequently attend the place to learn about its history and for an overall educational experience. However it is highly recommended that reservations be made for school groups or other large groups so everyone may be accommodated.

The history of Fulham Palace is really incredibly within itself. That is because the Bishops of London owned the estate for more than 1300 years and they used it as their country home as early as the 11th century. That’s an incredibly long time for any entity to own a piece of real estate! The reign ended in 1975 when the Bishops left the palace and the Hammersmith and Fulham Council as well as the Fulham Palace Trust took over the management of the palace.

As you wander throughout the rooms in the palace you will be able to interpret the history that is associated with this amazing place and think back to the origins and how British life was when the palace was built. You can span from prehistoric times until today simply by exploring the palace and that is amazing. You may visit the palace and grounds free of charge which makes this an affordable tourist destination!

Volunteers run the palace and new volunteers are always welcome. Kids are welcome, too, as long as they are accompanied and there is an art cart that is always close by that allows kids to work on art or other projects.

Make sure you check out the gardens while you are at Fulham Place because they are considered some of Britain’s most famous and important gardens. Once upon a time the longest moat in England encircled the gardens but in 1924 it was filled in. One reason why the garden is so famous is that grapes grown here by Bishop Grindal were sent to Queen Elizabeth I and then later in the 17th century Bishop Compton brought exotic plants and trees from Virginia, mainly the magnolia, and planted them in the garden. This was a first for England as well as all of Europe. These transplantations did not work, but the effort was noble and worthwhile to note.

Kids with disabilities are welcome at the Michael Williams Palace Playground, which is operated by the charity Kids. It is designed specifically for kids with disabilities and attracts plenty of kids each day. The playground is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday though Saturday and from 3 pm until 6 pm Tuesday through Friday.

The easiest way to arrive is walking. Simply take the Putney Bridge tube (District Line) and then walk eight minutes. If you follow the Thames Path along the river and through Bishop’s Park you will arrive. The best buses to take are 74, 220, and 430.
